The opportunity to travel is tempting for many young people and combining this with studying can be a more cost-effective and life enhancing means of doing so.

Immersing yourself in a totally foreign culture can prove to be the optimal way to learn a new language as you are forced to adapt quickly in your new surroundings. And ultimately taking the leap to study abroad can lead to improved employment opportunities in the future, with companies sure to look favourably on people who were confident enough to head abroad to improve their education.

Two cities within Europe stand out for me firstly as must see places, but secondly as amazing places to head to if you are looking to study abroad.

Study abroad Paris, France

First of all, PARIS, this phenomenal city really takes your breath away. Without doubt the most romantic city in the world, with some of the world’s most iconic and familiar landmarks, Paris will endlessly keep you entertained.

If you choose to study abroad Paris there is so much to explore outside of the classroom, which, if studying the native language, will only improve your understanding.

Paris is more than just the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame (although they are mightily impressive), it’s about the atmosphere, the people, exploring the side streets and bars and cafes that will undoubtedly lead to another view of the tower.

Leave at home the widespread views of rude Parisians, as once you involve yourself within the local culture and make the effort to speak French you will realise how friendly and sociable they really are.

If Paris is not you your liking and you are still looking at France as a study destination then the likes of Marseille, Toulouse or Lyon maybe more suitable. Marseille in particular is another beautiful city, perched on the Mediterranean with a beautiful climate there is much to see and do.

study abroad Rome, Italy

The city that fills second place on my list of places to study however is Rome. The ‘Eternal City’ is the perfect location for students of Italian, History, Art, Architecture, Fashion etc. It really is one of the highlights of Europe, a city where old meets new and goes hand in hand.

If you study abroad Rome for a period of time you will certainly find it difficult to leave, you will never tire of being surrounded by amazing historical sites, beautiful cuisine and even more beautiful people.

It’s important to choose the right destination for your studies abroad, but wherever you may end up, one thing is for sure; it will be a time of your life you will never forget.

Located in south western France, this fortified walled city was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

With more than 3 million visitors a year, it has become as recognisable as the famous Mont Saint Michel. Carcassonne itself is a castle that is also a city. The city is known as La Cite de Carcassonne, and around it lays the modern city of Ville Basse.

The breathtaking Cite de Carcassonne is protected by a double row of fortified walls that extend for almost two miles in length, with 56 impressive watchtowers along the stretch of wall.

No matter which direction you are travelling from, it is almost impossible to miss the grand silhouette of this magnificent structure.

History of the Medieval City of Carcassonne

This city dates back to 6000 BC, and suffered several invasions during its colourful history. The first of these came from barbarians in the 3rd century AD, and it was this invasion that led to the people of the city building a single wall, which replaced the massive wooden fence and moat that had protected the city up until that point.

After another invasion in 1230, it was decided that a second wall was needed. This was when the walls were transformed into the beautiful double strength reinforcements that we admire today. The walls remain intact and are considered the most successful architectural achievement from that European period. A visit to the Medieval City of Carcassonne will carry you all the way back to the heart of medieval times.

More information about Carcassonne can be found at http://www.carcassonne.org/.

Learning a language is a fun activity which opens the door to so many new experiences. There are various different ways to learn French, and below are some of the most common.

Take a college course

This is a good option due to the fact that the lessons and timetables are structured for you and therefore there is less chance of you defaulting on your learning. Another advantage of learning this way is that you can interact with other students and put your new skills to use. Having a teacher also provides you with a source of help and inspiration. You can also take lessons in a French school in Paris or in various cities across France.

Distance learning

There are various companies who offer the opportunity to learn French at home using materials which are provided to you. These materials will generally be a mixture of written and audio. The main benefit of this is that you can learn in your own time and at your own pace.

Work in the country

One of the best ways to learn French is to immerse yourself in the language. You may consider travelling to France and taking a job, regardless of the environment, and learn from the locals.

Use a private tutor

If you do not have time to go to a college course, or simply do not fancy it, you should be able to source a local tutor who will come to your house or meet at an arranged location. This can sometimes be an expensive option but is often very effective.

Watch French TV

Watching French TV is a good way to pick up language, and often cartoons are a good choice due to the simpler language which is used.
